Odds are almost everyone, everywhere, has some awareness of this particular fish family.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eTheir whiskers, the reason for their name, are called barbels and \u003cspan color=\"#ff0000\"\u003econtain the greatest concentration of their sensory organs\u003c\/span\u003e. Where they lack scales, they make up for it in taste buds. Their entire body is covered in taste receptors that allow them to taste their food long before they sense it any other way.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCatfish have been the “big fish” in many a tall tale. \u003c\/strong\u003eIf you’re from the South, you’re likely to know at least one story of the big one that didn’t get away.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFor as long as we’ve been fishing them, we’ve been coming up with ways to do it. A rod and reel, a trout line, jug fishing (a fishing line, lure, and weight tied to an empty milk jug that floats in the water), limb lines (a simple baited line hanging from a springy low limb over the water) — \u003cstrong\u003ebut the one that got me interested in catfish in the first place was the hoop net.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHoop nets are woven into the fabric of this place we call home. They say we don’t have seasons in Louisiana, but locals know better.
Deer season, duck season, alligator season, and a year-round fishing season, broken into microseasons within.
If you grew up in a family like mine, the calendar followed the rhythm of those seasons. They dictated everything from when your dad would be gone for the weekend to what you’d be eating for dinner.
Those kills and catches are quite literally what we’re made of.
Just like the weather, each season comes with its own gear — and maybe even its own camp. Fishing camps, huntin’ camps… camps where you heard tall tales over late-night card games, long after a fresh meal of whatever the Louisiana wild had gifted you that day.
My stepdad growing up was a boat mechanic — a busy business in Sportsman’s Paradise. ;) When he wasn’t working on boats, he was likely fishing from one; a lot of those times, we kids were in tow.
Some of my best memories are drenched in the scent of muddy river water mixed with oil and gas, and the sound of an old fishing boat engine puttering on a hot aluminum skiff packed with kids and ice chests full of False River fish.
This little collection of Louisiana fish is my homage to the fish in our bones, the ones caught in mud-brown rivers, backwater swamps, and pasture ponds.
