Essential Oil Diffuser Jewelry — How to Wear and Care for MIMOSA's Wearable ESO Diffusers

Essential Oil Diffuser Jewelry

I've carried a vile or two of standby oils for as long as I can remember. Several years ago, my stepmom asked if I "use oils." I said, "yes, I think so?!" By "use" I meant I add them to bathwater, dab some on my wrists, and that was about it. Little did I know she was going to introduce me to the essential oil revival that we were are all experiencing.

Once I had my head wrapped around what oils could do for me, I was on a mission to outfit everything from my house to myself with essential oil diffusers. I found sleek home diffusers all day long, but my search came up sparse on the wearable options. So boom, born of necessity, like most of my work, I had a new project — essential oil diffuser jewelry.

Our essential oil diffuser jewelry exists to be a simple, minimal way to wear your favorite calming, energizing, or soothing scents all day, whatever they may be.

Using & Caring for Essential Oil Diffuser Jewelry

Whenever you need a little extra peace and calm, and even when you don't, add a drop of your favorite essential oil to the terra cotta disc on your diffuser jewelry, put it on, and you're good to go for the day. The stronger the scent, the longer it'll last. — Lavender a day or so, Patchouli forever. (I kid, but more like a week. ;)

To keep your essential oil diffuser jewelry looking like new, you can wear it in the shower and let the warm soapy water work its magic. You can also soak it in a bowl of warm soapy water.

When it comes to the essentials, ylang ylang is my go-to oil. Even before I knew anything about the magical powers of oils, that scent made me feel at home. My grandmother's family has been in the florist business since they came over from Europe. She sold wet, newspaper-wrapped flowers and herbs on Canal Street in New Orleans when she was a girl.

Some of our family still owns a flower shop there. My parents' first house was two houses down from that shop and until my dad moved, the flower shop was my playground. Ylang ylang brings me right back to that flower shop.

We'd love to hear your feedback, thoughts, favorite oils, and ways to wear them in the comments.

Lost-Wax Carved Jewelry: Making the Essential Oil Diffuser Jewelry Collection

The diffuser collection is one of my favorites not only because it is beautiful and functional but also because it symbolizes MIMOSA's evolution. For years, the jewelry we sold online and at markets was clay. It was a medium I started using without knowing a thing about it, and what I learned came from countless hours of digging my fingers into those damp chunks of earth. It taught me patience but gave me the freedom to create in a way that metal hadn't up till then. When we started casting, my hands had a hard-earned muscle memory from carving clay that translated well to wax. But once we went all in on casting in bronze, there was little room for playing with clay.
When I had the idea to create a piece for holding oils, I knew we had to incorporate a material that was porous enough to hold oils but sturdy enough to take everyday wear. Clay was the answer; shrinkage was the challenge. The carved and molded wax pieces shrink during the casting process. Clay, when dried and fired, also shrinks. So we had to work out how the original carved pieces in wax and wet clay, once cast and fired, would ultimately end up with the exact sizes we would need to fit precisely together.

Once we finally worked that out (and it took a while), we had to find a way to keep them together. Dawson used his engineering mind to create a locking system that I still can't believe he figured out how to do. It holds the clay discs in place and allows us to open and replace discs if needed.
The end product is a total collaboration for Dawson and me and a mash-up of materials we'd loved working with. It's still not the easiest piece to make. The assembly takes time, and more layers of work go into it, but it's a piece that lets the wearer hold delicious-smelling oils, and it looks great while it does it (if I do say so myself. ;)
